A unique feature of analysis is that the shifting strains at the junction of the analysand's and analyst's activities create a relational exchange, one that calls for definition and a comprehensible set of emotion-laden meanings. Thus, the relationship between analyst and analysand provides more than the working basis for the analysis; its shifting strains provide crucial data, from which the most significant aspects of understanding are derived [Lichtenberg, 1983, pp. 236-237).
The analysand will be under all the strains and tensions brought to the analysis as a consequence of the full accumulation of unresolved regulatory disturbances and conflicts from the past. In the analysis, the analysand will be pulled toward an internally obligatory (and analytically necessary) full expression of his or her perceived needs and wishes—as an immediate demand. At the same time the analysand will be drawn by the desire to comply with the goal shared with the analyst, to confined action and interaction to exploring meanings [Lichtenberg, 1983, p. 235].
