IN SHAKESPEARE'S PLAY RICHARD III, his mother, the Duchess of York, complains resentfully:
Thou Cams't on earth to make the earth my hellA grievous burden was thy birth to me.Tetchy and wayward was thy infancyThy schooldays frightful, desp'rate, wild and furious …
I begin with this quote because I will be describing work in a school where every effort is made by staff to ensure that life for their severely damaged students is not “frightful or desperate,” yet where, despite a thoughtful and sensitive approach, the experiences of both staff and pupils can often be described as “wild and furious.”
