THESE SEVEN PAPERS ELICIT A DIFFERENT TEXTURE THAN THE papers written by the North American authors in the first two issues of this series. The North American authors searched for the truth about the working and the treatment of the mind. Each journey was characterized by the eventual growth of the authors as they dealt with the limitations of the knowledge that was acquired and their disappointments in some teachers who denied what they did not know.
The South American authors wrote more about the matrix of pluralism that has contributed to the nature of their journeys in becoming psychoanalysts. They seem more responsive to the demands of pluralism. It may be that this greater responsiveness is related to the nature of being South American. If this is true, South American analysts are poised to make unique contributions to psychoanalysis in the 21 st century when one of the major challenges for psychoanalysts will be to find ways to creatively use our great plurality and diversity.
