I Have Been Blessed to know Carl Rotenberg, M.D. over the Past six years. I originally contacted him because of an article he wrote (“Selfobject Theory and the Artistic Process”) that inspired me, becoming one of the sources of many ideas of my own that I began to develop at the time. That meeting was the beginning of a close collaboration between Carl and myself. Our shared interest was psychoanalysis, creativity, and art. Then five years ago we began to collaborate with Carol Press whose book The Dancing Self resonated with our interests and beliefs. Together with Carol we began to conduct workshops on art and creativity at the Annual Conference of the Psychology of the Self. The three of us did not feel we were working—we were having fun. Carl's enthusiasm for art was contagious. He was the author of a number of important articles on psychoanalysis, as well as a lively presenter at many conferences and workshops. At the time of his death Carl and I had just completed our editorial collaboration on this issue of Psychoanalytic Inquiry. Carl taught me how creativity thrives in relationships, and this was surely the case for us—I will miss him.
