There is agreement on the use of metaphoric processes to conceptualize aspects of experience, as a clinical tool and about the necessity of metaphor in theory formation and structure. Each psychoanalytic perspective employs metaphors specific to the articulation of its theoretical and technical principles. The articles in this issue demonstrate that conceptions of metaphoric processes can address the underlying formulations of unconscious processes used in each perspective. This, then, affords a basis for common ground. An avenue for further exploration and discussion is to seek a link between the use of unconscious metaphoric processes with the use of concepts that capture the nature of clinical process. This would further extend the formulation of a comprehensive structure for the common ground among perspectives. This work will be the subject of a subsequent issue of Psychoanalytic Inquiry on metaphoric processes and psychoanalytic fields.
