What made us choose to become psychoanalysts? How did we come to devote our working lives to healing the emotional suffering of our fellow humans? What drew us to the psychoanalytic theories that guide our work? The articles and discussions in this issue should dispel all doubt that we could even begin to answer these questions without reflecting on our place in the world.
Not only have my fellow contributors provided intimate glimpses into their development as analysts and as human beings, they have also opened portals into our world that might otherwise have remained inaccessible. Much of what they courageously revealed involves the darkest aspects of human relatedness and documents the grievous harm we are capable of inflicting on one another. At the same time, they have shown us what is most inspiring about our shared humanity. In light of what they have risked letting us know, perhaps we can dare to hope that healing is possible not only for our patients, but also for ourselves and those with whom we share our planet.
I cannot find words to express my profound gratitude for these extraordinary contributions.
