The author describes a patient’s experience of the simultaneity of past, present, and future, and draws some parallels to Freud’s sense of timelessness. Free time, or freedom from time, can be considered both an achievement in analysis, like the achievement of free association, and a defense against the sense of one’s own mortality. Ultimately, the patient’s capacity to grieve the anticipation of his own death alleviated some of his terror of the end of time. Some correlations with literature and painting are considered.
