Over the years, we have been graced with the presence and wisdom of many exceptional Chicago analysts. A number of those who have spoken to the class are either no longer with us or have retired, including Ernest Wolf (on self psychology and empathy), Marian Tolpin, (on the forward edge), Sallie Jenkins (a feminist case study), Kenneth Newman (on D. W. Winnicott), and Arnold Goldberg on multiple case studies exemplifying his work on the vertical split. Arnold Tobin has spoken on classical Freudian analytical theory, primarily sexuality and the structural model of the psyche. Others who have come to our class, but who are also not represented in the responses that follow, include Virginia Berry (Proust and neuroscience), Christine Kieffer (on oedipal victors and child therapy), Denise Davis (a case study on therapeutic boundaries), Robert Galatzer-Levy (chaos theory), Carla Leone (couples therapy), Jonathan Lear (his book Radical Hope [2006] and his work on irony [2011]), Mark Levy and Linda Marino (a comparative theoretical case study), Bonnie Litowitz (gender fluidity), Jane McCormack (a case study), Erika Schmidt (the Chicago Institute, of which she is the present Director), Neal Spira (religion—especially Judaism—and psychoanalysis). It is hard to express how much we learned from these analysts; they were transformative thinkers not only for the class, but for both of us.
The class also spends a full day at the Institute for Clinical Social Work (ICSW), where a number of therapists and analysts have presented, including Alan Levy, Scott Rose, Gabriel Ruiz, Karen Bloomberg, and more who have gathered to discuss the video On Treatment with the students. (The students find themselves interested in ICSW because it is one of the few institutions that offers an initial practicing degree with a concentration in psychoanalysis).
It is, of course, impossible to do a transcription of each of the classes taught by our analysts. What we think is important for a volume devoted
