CAPA has been an astonishing personal and professional adventure for the more than four hundred teachers, treaters and supervisors and for the more than four hundred students and graduates.
Beginning this year, the students and graduates will outnumber the Western CAPA members, which is what we had always hoped for. The Chinese students and graduates have begun a CAPA psychotherapy training program in Mandarin – another wish fulfilled. The Western CAPA faculty, all of whom work pro bono, have demonstrated extraordinary generosity and commitment to psychoanalysis. CAPA has enabled mental health professionals from more than thirty cities in China to meet online and in person, often forming close personal and professional relationships. Many of the Chinese CAPA members have written about how their lives have been changed by their distance analyses. At the recent (May 2019) Sixth Psychoanalytic Congress in Shanghai, 1/4 of the papers were presented by CAPA students, graduates, and faculty. None of us imagined when we began this journey how successful and gratifying would be the outcome.
