Following Joe’s death, when the Editorial Board of Psychoanalytic Inquiry was considering how to honor Joe, Linda suggested we come together to collaborate on this project, Enduring Collaborations: Joseph D. Lichtenberg Remembered, having jointly coauthored a book about Joe in 2016 (Psychoanalytic Theory, Research, and Clinical Practice: Reading Joseph D. Lichtenberg).
Here, we offer those who have been in close collaboration with Joe, nationally and internationally, an opportunity to share the nature of their collaborations and relationships with him.
This issue provides the reader of Psychoanalytic Inquiry the opportunity to see how Joe steadily worked with ideas, theoretical and clinical matters, and how he engaged a range of individuals in meaningful projects. The reader will appreciate Joe’s influence in promoting his evolving theoretical ideas regarding self psychology, infant development, attachment, motivational systems, shame, and a sense of power. One gets a glimpse of Joe’s understanding of the nature of the relationship between analyst and patient, and the centrality of their mutually created space in the treatment process.
