She is the Director of Psychoanalytic Training, Founding Member and Training and Supervising Analyst at the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in Washington, DC. She is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis, where she received an award for excellence in teaching in 2019. Dr. Hershberg is a Geographical Supervising Analyst at the St. Louis Institute of Psychoanalysis and the Pittsburgh Psychoanalytic Center. She is a Clinical Associate Professor at Georgetown University Medical School. Dr. Hershberg is an Associate Editor of the journal Psychoanalysis, Self and Context and is on the Editorial Board of Psychoanalytic Inquiry. Dr. Hershberg has published and presented papers on a variety of subjects including biography and psychoanalysis, pregnancy and creativity, therapeutic action, ethics, and the mother/daughter relationship. Her most recent papers include “Mothering a Child with a Visible Facial Difference: The Gaze of the Mother and the Gaze of the Other,” and “A Female Gaze in/on the Female Body in Art and Psychoanalysis: Paula Modersohn-Becker.” Dr. Hershberg is Co-Editor and contributor to the book Psychoanalytic Theory, Research, and Clinical Practice: Reading Joseph D. Lichtenberg (2016). In 2023 she edited and contributed to an issue of Psychoanalytic Inquiry entitled HOME.

Co-Chair of the Psychoanalysis and Law Discussion Group of the American Psychoanalytic Association. Also, she is a consulting editor for the journal Psychoanalytic Inquiry. From 1997 to 2020, she created and was chair of the Family Law and Family Forensics Training Program at Washington Square Institute, which offered an interdisciplinary approach to working with families within the Court system. Dr. Gunsberg has co-edited and written chapters in the volumes, A Handbook of Divorce and Custody: Forensic, Developmental, and Clinical Perspectives; Fathers and Their Families; and Psychoanalytic Theory, Research, and Clinical Practice: Reading Joseph D. Lichtenberg. She was editor and contributor to a section on separation and divorce in the journal, Psychoanalytic Study of the Child (2019). For Psychoanalytic Inquiry, Dr. Gunsberg has co-edited and contributed to the journal issues: Separation-Individuation Revisited; The Psychoanalyst in the Courtroom; and The Adoption Journey. She has recently contributed to the journal issue, HOME (“Homesickness: Its Particular Relevance to the Children of Separation and Divorce”). Dr. Gunsberg received her psychoanalytic training at the New York University Postdoctoral Training Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. In her private practice, she sees children of all ages and adults. In her forensic work, she specializes in areas of complex issues regarding overnights for infants and toddlers in the context of separation and divorce, the child’s paradoxical preference to live with the batterer in child custody cases, stalking in the context of family dissolution, parental child abduction, parental alienation, and post-traumatic stress disorder in children and adults. She is a trial consultant to legal teams, domestic and international.
