In this article, three Israeli analysts, who had long standing acquaintance with Joe Lichtenberg, share with the readers thoughts and memories from their encounters and continuously inspiring relationship with him. They touch upon his courage, originality and creativity, in the quest of breaking away from dogmatic conventions and into new horizons of psychoanalytic practice, theory and research. Joe is described as a noble guardian of psychoanalysis, who was a par excellence representative of an ongoing tradition seeking the in-depth affinities between psychoanalysis and culture, the understanding of the malaises of contemporary human existence, and the psychic and spiritual paths leading to personal and collective hoped-for healing. The authors emphasize Joe’s dedication to nurturing collaboration between analysts from all over the world and the exchange of new psychoanalytic ideas among them. Finally, the authors share unique personal moments and experiences with Joe, which shed more light on his generosity and warmth.
