After recounting my journey from being a professor at Emory University to becoming a practicing psychoanalyst, while maintaining my career as a professor, I turn to a comparison of psychoanalytic education and doctoral education in the Arts & Sciences. I relate many of these contrasts to differences in the institutional arrangements in which each takes place, and I note the attractions and impediments to analytic training for those in an academic career. I advocate for licensure to accompany graduation from an analytic institute, arguing that current regulations in many states prevent academics who might otherwise do so from becoming clinicians because they are not licensed. Closer relations between psychoanalysis and the university can only be to the benefit of both.
