In this memoire, Lachmann describes in engaging detail how music, listened to in home and experienced in the concert hall, helped his parents reconstitute a sense of self after having emigrated to the United States prior to the Second World War, and how throughout adulthood, melody helped him feel grounded and vitalized. In particular, Lachmann discusses how musicality in interpersonal communication contributes to messaging and meaning in intersubjective experience.
