Addictions are psychological symptoms, a subset of compulsions. Because addictions are sometimes focused on drugs, observers for millennia have made the mistake of thinking that drugs and their effects are relevant to the nature of this psychological mechanism. Addictions, like other common symptoms, are also not linked to any one character type or level of psychological development. Understanding the psychology at work in addiction allows for its proper treatment and is best practiced by people with a psychodynamic/psychoanalytic understanding of human behavior.
