In this paper, I propose that an important element of a mixed-race person’s self-conceptualization of racial identity is derived from their internalization of the interracial primal scene, which includes how White-other interracial couples enact White-dominant norms. In my work with Latinx-White mixed couples, I have noted a tendency for the couple to foreclose discussions about race and its impact on the relationship. I argue that the interracial couple’s dissociation from racial stratification leaves them stuck in the paranoid-schizoid position, creating an internalized primal scene for the mixed-race child that maintains a racially split identity and prevents a fluid, whole, integrated sense of mixed-race selfhood. I believe that it is necessary when working with mixed-race couples to not only explicitly discuss their mixed-race status but to do so in a way that helps the couple see and understand their shared unconscious phantasies, manner of projections, assumption of particular roles in the relationship, and how those dynamics are hierarchically racialized to maintain White-dominant cultural ideals.
