The Jewish and Palestinian nationalisms were shaped through interdependence. For far too long, we have been splitting our bodies and minds, both within and between them. Horizontal splits – we repressed, denied, and projected. But primarily, vertical splits. We averted our gaze, refused to know what we saw, to see what we knew. On October 7, reality arrived and erupted into our lives without mercy. The cruel intrusion of reality into our consciousness, the unbearable suffering we now experience, is, to my understanding, the beginning of our personal and collective journey – mine, ours, of all of us – toward mending our horizontal and vertical splits. Interdependence is our destiny. In order to mend the group-self fracture of each nation alone and both nations together, we must restore our wholeness and historical continuity. This can only happen if we become selfobjects for each other. We must “Seek peace and pursue it” (Psalms 34:15), seek for ourselves and pursue it for all.
