This article explores three different ideas about hate, politics and Indian culture, and then attempts to come to an understanding about something culturally specific about the use of hate in Indian politics. Hate is explored in the context of Ernest Jones’ concept of the hate impulse. Politics is explored in the context of Laswell’s definition of politics as “who gets what, when, how,” and Indian culture is explored in the context of the experience of enlightenment.
