In this paper, we situate the current politics of Brazil – particularly its elements of exclusion, division, and hate – within the trajectory of developments in the country during the 20th and 21st centuries. We suggest that many of the current struggles must be understood in the context not only of both modern developments but of the very multi-faceted discourse around modernity. While focusing on Brazil, we discuss some the implications of the Brazilian case for other democracies.
