Trauma is a complicated process involving individuals’ capacity to integrate not only the original stimulus but the unconscious elements that are stimulated. Unconscious omnipotence can suppress grief and mourning and keep individuals alive during catastrophic experiences but this sort of narcissism can stop them from getting help. Defensive narcissism hides a need for parents and replaced by wishful fantasies. The child takes in the parents’ anxieties and joins with the phantasies and wishful thinking. Loewald’s Levels of Integration are useful in understanding how mans’ inhumanity to man is far too brutal to be integrated into normal life. The inherited trauma is unconsciously transmitted and repeated.
