Introduction: This is the recorded spontaneous discussion of the papers by Drs. Oliner, Ursano, and Barratt. This includes the speakers as well as questions/comments from the attendees.
Dr. Oliner: As I was listening to the two speakers who came after me, I had the feeling, and I don’t know whether I’m distorting something, that we were all speaking about different areas in a way that made me feel that there was nothing that I said that was in any way contradicted by either one of the two following speakers. I would like just to hear whether this is my illusion or that we were, indeed, speaking about the same thing in different ways.
Dr. Ursano: I think there was substantial overlap. Particularly, thinking of Marion and Barnaby’s perspectives, I was most struck in Marion’s particularly by her personal vignettes and the interpersonal qualities of both her description and frequently the people that she cited. And I find that very much in my perspective of the question of the rule of the psychosocial elements and their relationship to trauma and recovery. In Barnaby’s, I was reminded of an area I didn’t mention, but of the questions of irritability and aggression and how we manage those in psychotherapy. It’s a particularly important topic in another area that we work in, which is suicide and suicide risk and understanding the contributions of irritability and aggression in changes to behavior. Does there have to be some kind of stirring up of things for change to take place at all … some type of activation before, in fact, things can settle into a new way? I enjoyed all the talks, and they raised important questions.
Dr. Barratt: No, I was delighted by both my predecessors. I think we were an interesting, but odd, mix. If there is any point, I don’t know about contradiction, at which we might have some interesting discussion and debate, I think it’s around the body and healing, which is som
