Reflecting on processes involved with witnessing trauma reveals how the heart can break when extreme trauma takes over and simultaneously shows how the healing of human connection can take place. The author looks at the trauma of racism, rampant COVID, and war, revealing the central importance of the alive mind that is willing to see truths of trauma. When a blind eye disavows another’s pain, a second layer of trauma causes more damage. Witnessing is a life force, pushing against the absolute nothingness of the psychic helplessness of trauma. It is shown to be a powerful force that can help the feeling of humanity to co-exist with the terror of annihilation. The sense of witnessing gains vividness as the author describes her own nightmares in response to COVID fears using artistic representations illustrating fragmentation that takes place when there is passive bystandership. Symbolizing belongs to the “living mind” attempting to find ways to communicate.
