Our major intent of this Issue, “Trauma and Mind in War and Life, Understanding and Treating Trauma: A Psychoanalytic Philosophical Perspective,” has been to get the learning from conference of the same name out into the psychoanalytic literature so that continued learning and discussion can occur. Though the conference was in October 2020, we urgently need this information, as in our world war and trauma continue.
We believe in facing the reality that trauma is ubiquitous. Our articles and discussions span trauma of the Holocaust, racial othering, the Vietnam War, the wars post-9/11, and the COVID pandemic. We acknowledge that Veterans and military members are their own marginalized group and, though they act on behalf of a larger society, they are often misunderstood, and even projected upon by that same society. In terms of the military and Veterans, we are happy to contribute to the very small existing contemporary literature with just a few papers from the post-9/11 era (Carr, 2011, 2014; Wise, 2015). We understand more could have also been considered; but we had to select what was known to us at the time, being aware of the inherent limits of these choices.
Like our issue formatting, which included all the panel discussions and interactive dialogs—including with the attendees—we hope these discussions continue in analytic institutes, societies, and meetings, as well as with the general public.
Thank you for your consideration of this work, and thanks to all our original presenters, attendees, administrators, and the Contemporary Freudian Society for sponsoring the original conference.
