This paper explores ceremony within the Bushwick Book Club Oakland, a San Francisco Bay Area based literature and music performance series. Each event features eight artists who read the same book, compose original songs, and perform them for an engaged audience. Focusing on four artists inspired by Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass; (2013), this study unearths how the series functions as a form of ceremony. Through interviews and song lyric analysis, the paper highlights how musicians and audience members foster communal connection through shared music. Ultimately, the paper investigates the organic emergence of ritual and togetherness through intentional, music-driven exchange.
