The wisdom traditions of Indigenous peoples everywhere (including the ancestors of modern, urban society) include kin in a special relationship between people and lifesource (as well as the transcendental spirit and imminent soul of the individual). I extend this story to integrate the impersonal, universal forces of light and darkness as special aspects of animistic kinship rites. How might we reconsider our kinship with the originary darkness out of which the universe arose, as well as the light of life and consciousness, and the relationship between the two? Awareness of these matters enables an intertwined celebration, of individuation and cosmic flow, which can underscore an embodied animism for our times.
