When somatic experiences such as headaches, nausea, and sleepiness are felt in the psychotherapist's body, they are acknowledged as somatic countertransference in western psychotherapeutic practice. This paper researches somatic countertransference from a Chinese perspective by exploring the cultural notions of Qi, Yin and Yang, and psychic blockages addressed by the process of “talking acupuncture” known as psychotherapy in the west. Data provided by Chinese psychotherapists and clinical experts who acknowledge somatic countertransference or who work with Chinese medical, spiritual, and healing practices are referenced to describe and discuss these new cultural contributions to the field of somatic countertransference research.
