A brief description of the ancient practice of Xie-Yi painting in China is offered as an introduction to a more complete contribution to follow in the next issue of the journal. Xie-Yi painting includes the concepts of “evocative space-dialogue”, metaphor, analogical representation, rhythm, play, integration, and images of authentic selves. The author describes these elements and relates them to corresponding functions of modern analytic psychotherapy.
