In order to efficiently and effectively help patients with their sexual identity, sexual function, and relational concerns, it is important to understand several basic concepts. Sexuality plays numerous vital roles in our lives which, in this article, are discussed by answering these twelve questions. 1. How are adults nurtured in sexual relationships? 2. How is psychological intimacy created? 3. What is learned over time through sex? 4. What accounts for the pleasures of sex? 5. Why is sex important? 6. Why is sexual experience unstable? 7. What is a couple's sexual equilibrium? 8. What is sensuality? 9. Is a life of sexual pleasure possible? 10. What is sexual health? 11. What are the sources of distress about sex? 12. How do these concepts facilitate therapy? Therapy for sexual problems is not solely based on findings from scientific studies or a single ideological approach. It rests largely upon the comfort, interest, knowledge, and warmth of the psychotherapist.
