Symbolism carries significant theoretical and clinical implications in psychoanalysis. Freud aimed to establish compatibility between the connotations of symbols for both the individual and the collective, leading to an oscillating attitude between these perspectives. In contrast, Jung prioritised the collective and innate aspects of symbolism, giving precedence to collective significance over individual components. After the debates of the classical period, finally integrated by Jones, the psychoanalytic theory of symbolism solidified and the fundamental theses were built up. This evolutional lineage influenced theoretical viewpoints and also reflected practical and clinical methodologies associated with symbolism.
