I greatly enjoyed the recent Ferenczi issue, and congratulate the editors and authors on an excellent contribution.
In Jill Choder-Goldman's interview of Jeremy Safran, the question arose as to whether Kohut was familiar with or influenced by Ferenczi. Although it is not widely known, his published personal correspondence reveals that when Kohut came to the United States and began his psychoanalytic studies, he wrote to August Aichhorn asking him to send the complete edition of Ferenczi's papers. He later told John Gedo that as far as he was concerned, Ferenczi's work was second only to Freud's.
Even though these are probably the only published references to Ferenczi made by Kohut, they offer compelling evidence that Kohut was in fact strongly influenced by Ferenczi, though it would certainly not have been likely, given Kohut's loyalty to Anna Freud, that he would have acknowledged the connection in his professional writings.
