OPENNESS TO THE INTENSITIES OF COUNTERTRANSFERENCE CAN provide a unique window into both the communions and the close calls of analytic treatment. When the patient's personal narrative and mythology, interwoven with the analyst's own personal and familial narratives, converge upon history and political events, those collisions and collusions only magnify. This was the case with H., an accomplished Chinese journalist and gifted musician, living in America since the 1980s. His tumultuous life before, during, and after the Cultural Revolution and his courageous actions during the murder of students at Tiananmen Square brought him journalistic distinction and public recognition, but his successes were punctuated by episodes of depression, one of which led him to my office. He was a genuine hero, which enhanced his glamour and his stories in my eyes, but although this status ultimately deepened the treatment, it initially acted as a distortion.
