Treating trauma, especially Dissociative Identity Disorder, requires flexibility, resourcefulness, openness to experience, and an uncommon capacity for interpersonal attunement. This paradoxically leads to countertrauma and counterresilience, the inevitable effects of treating deeply traumatized and dissociated individuals. Drawing on a clinical example and referencing the points made in the roundtable, the author tracks his own countertraumatic and counterresilient reactions to treating a deeply traumatized man.
