I view Botticelli’s representation of war as a dialectic between active and passive, penetrator and penetrated as only part of the story. I suggest that utilizing the concept of complex trauma allows for incorporating aspects of vulnerability that can be both masculine and feminine. I introduce the role of moral injury in causing shame and humiliation and the self-imposed taboos on those who served talking about their guilt as a way the trauma is both perpetuated and transmitted intergenerationally.
