Betty Mann (left), Ethel Weiss Corky Karp (right), summer 1938, Scranton, Pennsylvania. My favorite photo of my mother and her friend, Betty Mann, age 14. Written in Mom’s hand on back: “Betty Mann & Ethel Weiss, Summer of 1938, Scranton, Penna.” Tenderness of teenage female friendship inspires, seeing these girls affectionately together. Photo Mom kept in albums she created, albums that were at the core of our intimacy, albums that she gave me in my earliest years to bind us together, albums that kept me company throughout my childhood, and that I treasured during visits for many decades after I left home for school and work life in New York, and that keep me company now.
