Annee Ackerman’s exploration of shared erotic desire strikes close to the heart of a theoretical matter near and dear to Relational and other contemporary psychoanalytic clinicians, that is, the recognition that it is only by entering into not only the patient’s but also the therapist’s own subjectivity that we can come closer to fully understanding the dynamics and the therapeutic action of a treatment. This commentary explores the impact of analyst–patient shared erotic desire on the treatment and potential therapeutic action. It also examines the negative implications when the therapist’s erotic desire is dissociated and/or otherwise felt to be forbidden.
