Ackerman describes a clinical situation that stirred up intense and shameful feelings of sexual arousal in her. She turned to a supervisor, who offered no context through which to understand her feelings intersubjectively. In this discussion, I consider the interaction of individual elements (a one-person perspective) with the co-constructed unconscious enactment (the intersubjective perspective). It is through the intersubjective context (the third) that the unspeakable can be known. Dissociated elements can then become available to be integrated while maintaining self-coherence. Supervision, when done well, provides an essential context for untangling complex transference/countertransference knots.
