The first impression for me was of division. Between the women and men, and within the classes of passengers. Although this photograph was taken before the First World War, such divisions are growing more extreme in many countries today. Psychoanalysis may be beginning to get interested. I hope so.
My particular concern now is the psychology of inequalities of wealth. I am probing the psychological obstacles to achieving more equality. This is very important when, in many Western countries, we are seeing a rise in “assortative mating”—meaning when rich people marry other rich people.
