This commentary builds on Charalambides’ innovative article (this issue), which explores the relationships between psychoanalytic and analytically oriented group approaches in connection to psychoanalytic education. Grounded in reflections on alternative models in psychoanalytic education as well as on Charalambides’ experience as director of the Athenian Institute for Relational and Group Psychotherapy, I discuss Charalambides’ new proposed training framework, which combines the foundational elements of psychoanalytic education, mainly relational psychoanalysis, with group-relational processes. In addition, I present a pioneering experience undertaken by psychoanalysts and group analysts at the Brazilian Psychoanalytic Society of Rio de Janeiro, an affiliate of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), whose endeavor is an example of a group model that has already been incorporated into analytic training with great success. Finally, in discussing centenary evaluations of Eitingon’s tripartite model, my article points to the relevance of Charalambides’ proposal regarding a “group turn” in psychoanalytic education.
