In this paper, I will discuss Bion’s idea of being with ‘no desire’ in the consulting room and try to transform this theoretically abstract concept into an accessible and practical one. I will demonstrate how our encounter with patients’ suffering evokes a desire within us to cure them that can harm the therapeutic process, and explain why our ability to suspend this desire may help our patients live fuller lives. I will use a clinical illustration to show how this idea can be used in the consulting room.
