This paper explores the intrapsychic conflicts experienced by 60 psychoanalysts and psychotherapists concerning fee-setting. Two thirds of the sample surveyed were particularly affected by this dilemma. The conflict is traced to (1) society's conflicting messages about money, (2) the lack of professional training concerning money matters, and (3) the enormous social mobility of many practitioners. Although both males and females were found to harbor ambivalent feelings regarding fee-setting, the women were more acutely aware of their conflict and therefore more pained by it. Finally, practitioners, depending on their individual character types, have different attitudes concerning fee-setting. Seven common problems are illustrated.
