Clinical psychoanalysis has increasingly concerned itself with the contributions made to the psychoanalytic relationship by the therapist's personality, transferences, and countertransferences. In keeping with that concern, this article focuses on my own thoughts and feelings as I've observed them in the course of my functioning as a psychoanalyst. Questions like: What's the ongoing nature of my experience in sessions?; How come I say what I do say?; What prompts the interventions I make?; have guided my observations. My intention is to contribute to our understanding of what really goes on in analytic sessions, not simply what is formally portrayed.
