In 1977, the American Psychological Association (APA) developed and published a set of guidelines for nonsexist language. In 1982, the Publications and Communications Board decided to require manuscripts submitted to any APA journal to use nonsexist language. I was dismayed recently to find sexist language (and awkwardly phrased nonsexist language) in this journal. When I investigated, I became aware that many of our members were not aware of the APA guidelines and requirement.
The APA guidelines are comprehensive and quite literate. They can be found in the Publications Manual, 3rd ed. The Manual is available for $12.50 for APA members and affiliates, plus $2.00 for shipping and handling. It may be ordered from the following address: APA Order Department, P.O. Box 2710, Hayattsville, MD 20784.
