Recent debates about analytic strategy revolve around different stances by the analyst in regard to his or her activity. Proponents of a relational stance often misunderstand classical analytic technique and assume that classical analysts are cold, detached, or critical. Modern-day classical thinking on technique is discussed in an effort to correct this misunderstanding. Two clinical vignettes from analyses of adolescents are presented to demonstrate modern-day classical technique. These vignettes show that a classical analyst can remain neutral without being cold, detached, or critical so long as an emphasis on understanding and interpreting intrapsychic conflict is maintained.
