This article presents a study of 25 children analyzed at the Anna Freud Centre who physically attacked their analyst in the course of treatment, requiring restrictions in the form of physical restraint (holding the child) along with verbal intervention and interpretation. Of the cases studied, two primary groups were found: (a) those who struggled with separation anxiety and the fear of abandonment, and (b) those who had developed a sadomasochistic mode of relating which was reenacted in the course of the analysis. The discussion of the two groups includes technical findings and recommendations.
