This book, which consists of original articles and is dedicated to Saul Scheidlinger and edited by Saul Tuttman, will be of great interest to the practicing analytic group therapist. It can also provide the individual analyst with an excellent overview of the current thinking of some of the leading figures in psychodynamic group therapy.
Saul Scheidlinger has been a prominent force in group therapy in the United States for the past 40 years. He has contributed significantly to the professional education of generations of group therapists in his capacities as editor of the International Journal of Group Psychotherapy and as a professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Each of the authors has written about topics of group theory and group therapy that have absorbed Scheidlinger's interest over the years. These include explication of key psychoanalytic concepts (especially identification, regression, and the group as a “mother”) and application of them to group therapy. He has also written extensively on empathy and interpretation, the dynamics of leadership, sex education, research in group therapy, scapegoating phenomena, the treatment of a wide variety of socially disadvantaged patients, and group approaches to the treatment of children and adolescents.
The list of authors who have written articles for this volume reads like a Who's Who of American and Canadian group therapy. The following is a list of these authors, with the names of members of Division 39's Section on Psychoanalysis and Groups (Section VII) italicized: E. James Anthony, Howard A. Bacal, Robert R. Dies, Margaret G. Frank, Walter I. Gadlin, Ramon Ganzarain, Emanuel Hallowitz, Ruth Hochberg, Leonard Horwitz, Priscilla
