Dear Division 39 members,
On behalf of Section III, Women and Psychoanalysis, I am delighted to introduce our special issue of Psychoanalytic Psychology. Section III has had a vital history within the Division. Over the last several years, we have worked in a number of arenas to join women's issues and feminist concerns with the project of psychoanalytic psychology.
Psychologists associated with the Section have been at the forefront of contemporary psychoanalytic writing on women and gender, addressing issues related to female development: sexuality, intimacy, and work in women's lives; and gender in psychoanalytic theory and practice. This effort at greater inclusiveness in psychoanalytic thought has not been simply one of filling a gap or of redressing the exclusion of women by “adding and stirring.” Rather, as we have revised and refined psychoanalytic perspectives on gender, we have participated in a transformation of psychoanalytic thought, more broadly framed.
The articles and reviews in this issue, thoughtfully compiled by the Guest Editors, Adria Schwartz, PhD, and Donna Bassin, PhD, reflect this transformation. We are proud to have the opportunity to present this collection, originally conceived under the tenure of Judie Alpert, PhD, and nurtured by Carole Morgan, PhD, both past presidents of Section III, and we are grateful to the Board of Division 39 and to the Editor of Psychoanalytic Psychology, Bertram Cohler, PhD, for their commitment to our task.
