Early object relations determine later sexual functioning and sexual maturity. Excessively domineering or frustrating parenting creates a need for dominance and imbalance of power for sexual arousal. Resolution of the sense of powerlessness within the child occurs through the creation of power fantasies, especially if the child cannot directly express his or her frustration. These fantasies can become sexualized at any stage of psychosexual development. Healthy and loving sexual relationships include equality and reciprocity of power.
