On Sunday, November 13, 1994, Dr. Merton Gill passed away. It is our good fortune that he lent his thoughts to the controversies in this issue, which were of particular interest to him at the time of his death. He leaves a magnificent legacy as a scholar, theorist, and psychoanalyst, and as a man who always spoke his mind. He had a glorious career, having been in the thick of virtually all the major psychoanalytic controversies over the last four decades. If ever there were a paragon of the psychoanalytic scholar/researcher as intellectual voyager, Merton Gill would be the one. The co-editors of this special section join their Division 39 brethren in mourning the departure of this remarkable man.
