This commentary indicates that E. Young-Bruehl's (1999) review of R. S. Wallerstein's (1995) The Talking Cures appreciated the book as a contribution to the history of psychoanalysis while criticizing it as too long and poorly written. Young-Bruehl then reflects on how important it is for contemporary historians of psychoanalysis to present developments in psychoanalysis after Freud and to do so in prose that can be read by people who are not psychoanalysts, thus connecting the field's history to other disciplines and general readers.
