Standing in the Spaces: Essays on Clinical Process, Trauma, and Dissociation represents a collection of significant articles that Dr. Bromberg wrote during his distinguished career from 1979 to 1998. Reading the articles together enables one to trace the evolution of Bromberg's clinical perspective and to understand it comprehensively. Inspired by Brombergian wit, I wanted to render a Brombergian reading of the collection, acting as the reviewer who stands in the spaces among the different essays and provides links between their disparate points so that they cohere in terms of presenting an overall message while retaining their separate identity. Yet, as various as the essays may be, each inspired by its particular clinical moment, they do not strike me as being comparable to dissociated self-states. Instead, they cover similar ground, defining Bromberg's interpersonal/relational clinical perspective with increasing clarity and breadth.
